If you are tired of your room’s decor, never fear because we have an easy fix for you! To get a completely fresh look, all you need to do is change out your throw pillows. Swapping out throw pillows is a great way to play around with the look and feel of your living room, bedroom, or family room without spending tons of money and… it’s super fun to do.
Take the attention away from the sofa, that you can’t replace just yet, and instead, let guests focus on your rockin’ pillow collection. When it comes to styling throw pillows, there are never-ending possibilities of color, texture, and pattern combinations.
Style Tip: keep in mind, pillows do not have to match. It’s the mix that makes the match!
Let’s get started….
-
Choose a color story. When choosing throw pillows for your space, ask yourself what color palette you want in the room. Pull in colors from other objects in the room such as rug, the sofa or bedding, and artwork to create a cohesive look.
-
Pick a dominant pattern or color. Pillows mix and match in three different patterns, if each pattern incorporates at least one of the colors in the color story you have chosen for the space.
-
Pick a solid-colored pillow. When it comes to color mixing, choosing a solid-colored pillow helps to anchor the pillows in the collection. The solid color can also be the main color in your color palette.
-
Add texture. As much as color and pattern are important in choosing pillows, don’t forget about the element of texture. Find pillows that are smooth, soft, fuzzy or have some trendy fringe. Look for velvets, linens, faux fur, and knits to add a creative touch to any room.
-
Mix shapes and sizes. Keep in mind that a smaller number of larger pillows looks fresher than a bunch of smaller ones. On my bed I have two larger pillows as a base layered with one lumbar. This combo works because the three pillows fill the bed nicely and they don’t compete.
-
Keep the season in mind. Follow nature’s schedule when swapping out throw pillows. In the winter, go with heavier fabrics and textures, think faux fur and knits. Spring brings more pastels and floral pattern.
Summer is bright with favorite shades of blue and in the Fall mix in all the rich colors of autumn like orange, red, yellow, and brown.
Whether it’s to refresh the look of my space, to introduce a new color, or to add in texture or pattern, nothing can do it better than a throw pillow. Whether your design style is on the modern, minimalist, or neutral side or you prefer a more boho, whimsical and trendy aesthetic, the right throw pillows can really bring a room together and make it feel polished, pulled together, and …beautiful.
